Editor's Letter 6 Seniors Housing Business n February-March 2018 One memorable highlight from this year's annual meeting of the American Seniors Housing Associa- tion was the first-ever Senior Living Hall of Fame presentation. The 2018 inductees each put their own stamp on the industry. The recipients or their representatives all expressed heartfelt thanks. The six members of the inaugural class included: • Granger Cobb, the late CEO of Emeritus Senior Living, which merged with Brookdale Senior Liv- ing in 2014. The Granger Cobb Insti- tute for Senior Living at Washington State University was created in his memory. • Bill Colson, the late founder of Holiday Retirement Corp. Colson saw the potential in building inde- pendent living apartments that fea- tured food service, transportation and social activities long before oth- ers followed suit in the late 1990s. • Bill Kaplan, founder of Senior Lifestyle in 1985 and creator of Senior Suites, an affordable seniors housing alternative for income- qualified residents. • Jim Moore, president of Moore Diversified Services, a venerable consult- ing firm. His detailed knowledge of the for-profit and non- profit sides of the busi- ness continues to be in demand. He's had over 4,500 consulting engagements in more than 1,200 markets nationally. • Bill Sheriff, former CEO of American Retirement Corp. and Brookdale Senior Living. When he retired in 2012, Brookdale controlled 647 communities in 35 states. • Stan Thurston, former president and CEO of Life Care Services, who is credited with having created the first 90 percent refundable entrance fee contract for continuing care retirement communities. The apple doesn't fall from the tree. Three of Jim Moore's adult children work at his company. To read more about how the busi- ness of seniors housing can be a family affair, please turn to page 30.
