AS H A 12 2016 ASHA 50 2016 The 2016 ASHA 50 survey was con- ducted as of June 1, 2016. The data portrays continued, steady growth for many of the larger seniors hous- ing owners and operators. At the mid-year, we continue to see plenti- ful access to capital for seasoned developers, owners, and opera- tors, and significant construction activity taking place in a number of U.S. markets, with particular emphasis on the development of new assisted living and memory care communities. Seniors Housing Real Estate Owners The total number of units owned by the 50 largest U.S. seniors hous- ing owners is 589,144 units. The largest five owners, all of whom are public companies, account for over half of the total owned units in this year's ASHA 50. Brookdale remains the largest seniors housing company in the U.S. with 78,595 units. Welltower Inc. (formerly Health Care REIT) has become the second largest owner with 65,042 units, a 9% increase over last year. Ventas Inc. follows as the third largest owner with 61,969 units. HCP Inc. with 49,000 units and Senior Housing Properties Trust at 34,687 units, round out the largest five owners. Publicly traded companies in this year's ranking represent 28% of the largest 50 owners, and account for nearly two-thirds (63% or 369,674 units) of the total owned units. Privately-held, for-profit com- panies that own 10,000 or more seniors housing units remains unchanged from 2015 and include: Boston Capital (29,134 units), Senior Lifestyle (16,187 units), Holi- day Retirement (10,474 units), and Harrison Street Real Estate Capital (10,000 units). ACTS Retirement-Life Commu- nities Inc. again ranks as the largest not-for-profit ASHA 50 owner with 7,902 units, followed by Presby- terian Homes & Services (7,325 units), and Covenant Retirement Communities (4,969 units).
