AS H A 14 2016 ASHA 50 2016 recently completed an affiliation and report owning 4,221 units under California Life Plan Communities. The minimum threshold for ranking on the ASHA 50 owners list increased to 2,855 units in 2016. Seniors Housing Operators The total number of units managed by the largest 50 seniors housing operators is 492,270 units. This year's largest five largest operators remains unchanged led by Brookdale with 104,878 units, followed by Holiday Retirement (37,659 units), LCS (32,832 units), Five Star Senior Living (31,202 units) and Sunrise Senior Living (22,991 units). The five largest operators account for almost half (47%) of the total managed units of the ASHA 50 operators. Although public companies represent less than 1% of ASHA 50 operators, they account for around a third (148,106 units) of the reported units managed. The larg- est publicly traded operators include: Brookdale, Five Star Senior Living, and Capital Senior Living Corpora- tion (12,026 units). Private, for-profit companies that operate more than 10,000 units include: Holiday Retirement (37,659 units), LCS (32,832 units), Sunrise Senior Living (22,991 units), Senior Lifestyle (21,875 units), Erickson Living (21,095 units), and Atria Senior Living Inc. (18,353 units). The following private, for-profit companies have experienced noteworthy growth since 2015 and have moved up the ASHA 50 rankings in 2016 by at least five positions: The Shelter Group (7,219 units), USA Properties Fund Inc. (6,825 units), Frontier Management (5,965 units), Discovery Senior Living (5,552), Vi (4,003 units), Merrill Gardens (3,872 units), Milestone Retire- ment Communities LLC (3,664 units) and Sagora Senior Living (3,303 units). ACTS Retirement-Life Communities Inc. is the largest not-for-profit operator, with a portfolio of 7,902 units. Presbyterian Homes & Services closely follows with 7,682 units. Other large not-for-profit operators include The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society (4,785 units), Covenant Retirement Communi- ties (4,725 units) and California Life Plan Communities (4,221 units).
