The community recently opened a new independent living building because of growing demand for units. ago the community broadened its potential customer base by open- ing its doors to those who had served at an offcer's level at the U.S. Defense and State depart- ments, the CIA, and other govern- ment agencies. "Our strategy was to grow the community to look more like the wider McLean-Arlington popu- lation," says Admiral Kathleen Martin, who retired from the Navy in 2005 and now serves as CEO of Vinson Hall. But the residents all come from similar backgrounds creating a natural affnity group, says Martin. "New residents feel at home quickly and make friends faster because they have a lot in common." In addition to the new inde- pendent living building, Vinson Hall also opened a new commu- nity building in December. The ground foor includes a therapy unit with a gym and a short-term- stay rehabilitation section with private rooms. As in many niche communities, short-term rehabili- tation and nursing care are open to anyone, not just residents or military retirees.
