AS H A 60 2016 ASHA 50 2016 Washington update When the 114th Congress returns after Labor Day, it is scheduled to be in session for a short four weeks before members head back home to campaign for their jobs next year or, for those seeking higher office, a better one. On a parallel track is the most bizarre political contest in modern history for the U.S. presidency, a race that is certain to continue to both entertain and discourage voters all the way until Nov. 8. And while Congress hasn't secured many accomplishments due to fierce partisanship over gun control, terrorism, the Zika virus and spending measures, it is note- worthy to highlight some issues of interest to ASHA members that have advanced or are expected to be acted upon before the end of the year. n Medical Expense Deductibility for Seniors. ASHA-sponsored legislation to stop a scheduled tax increase on seniors who use the medical expense deduction has been introduced in both the Senate and the House. ASHA's lobbying team is working to secure passage of this important legislation before the end of the year. These efforts are but- tressed by an ASHA-sponsored study — "The Importance of the Seniors' Medical Expense Deduction for the Oldest and Sickest Ameri- cans: Why Congress Should Not Let it Expire" — that assesses and quantifies the impact of the tax change on seniors. n Tax Reform. In anticipation of com- prehensive tax reform legislation next year, ASHA works to advance key legislation before year-end while setting its sights on policy priorities for the 115th Congress By Jeanne McGlynn Delgado, Vice President of Government Affairs, American Seniors Housing Association Aquisition • Development • Operations 500 Stevens Ave • Suite 100 • Solana Beach, CA SRGseniorliving.com • 858.792.9300 To be sure, we're proud of our 28 years of experience in senior living.
